Ben Fogle (OH 1987) - Curiosity
Ben Fogle, a writer, broadcaster, adventurer and father of Ludo (6) and Iona (5), was a pupil at The Hall School until 1987.

After the Hall he went on to Bryanston School in Dorset . Ben then went to university, where he obtained a degree in Latin American Studies and spent several years in Latin America, working on a turtle conservation project on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras and in an orphanage in Ecuador. In 2000 Ben volunteered to be marooned on Taransay, a remote windswept island in the Outer Hebrides as part of the BBC’s big millennium project Castaway 2000. It was a year that changed his life and unexpectedly opened the doors to television presenting.

Since then, Ben has rowed the Atlantic Ocean, crossed Antarctica on foot, run across the Sahara and ridden across the Empty Quarter of the Arabian Peninsula on an ill-tempered camel. He has presented numerous hit programmes including, New Lives in the Wild, The Great Migration, Operation Whale, Operation Shark, The Secret Life of Crocodiles, Extreme Dreams, Countrywise and Harbour Lives. Ben has written six Sunday Times bestseller books. His most recent is Labrador: The story of the world’s favourite dog. His next book is Land Rover. In amongst all of this, Ben still finds time to be an ambassador for WWF, Medecins Sans Frontier, Tusk, Centrepoint and the Princes Trust. He is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and patron of The Royal Parks Foundation and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society!

Ben’s favourite memory of his time at the Hall is weekends and summers spent with his fellow classmates. They remained best friends long after he left the Hall. Ben’s advice to our current pupils is that they not judge themselves or let anyone else judge them simply by their academic results. Academic success is admirable but there are many more ways to a rewarding life. Be true to yourself. Do the best you can. Have friends you trust and respect. All of these are even more important.
